How to Visit the Colosseum
The Colosseum is an ancient amphitheater in central Rome. The Parco archeologico del Colosseo, the state archaeological park, manages it along with the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill next door. Most independent visitors need one timed ticket for the Colosseum. The cheapest way to see the Forum and Palatine is a combined 24-hour ticket. The arena floor and the underground cost extra and sell out quickly.
Plan three to four hours to see the Colosseum, the Forum, and the Palatine in one day. Book a Colosseum time slot before you travel, check current prices and hours on the official site, and arrive early. Prices and hours here are current as of mid-October 2026, and the ones that change most often are flagged with a pointer to where to confirm them.
Ticket types for the Colosseum
The standard ticket is the combined Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine ticket. It is valid for 24 hours. It gives one entry to the Colosseum’s upper levels, but not the arena floor. It also gives one entry to the Forum and Palatine. The official ticket page describes these combined options, and it is the first place to check current prices.
Most visitors who want to walk on the arena floor buy an Only Arena ticket or a Full Experience Arena ticket instead. Only Arena is valid for 24 hours and includes one arena visit at your booked time. It also includes one Forum, Palatine and SUPER site entry within a window around your Colosseum time. Full Experience Arena is valid for two consecutive days. It includes Colosseum entry with arena access at the booked time, and the Forum, Palatine and SUPER sites can be visited on the same day, the day before, or the day after.
| Ticket | Valid for | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Standard combined | 24 hours | One Colosseum entry to the upper levels, no arena floor; one Forum and Palatine entry |
| Only Arena | 24 hours | One arena floor visit at the booked time; one Forum, Palatine and SUPER site entry |
| Full Experience Arena | Two consecutive days | Colosseum with arena access at the booked time; Forum, Palatine and SUPER sites on the same day, the day before, or the day after |
| Full Experience Underground and Arena | Two consecutive days | Listed in the visitor regulation; confirm the inclusions on ticketing.colosseo.it |
The Forum Pass SUPER covers the Forum, Palatine and Imperial Fora, but it excludes the Colosseum. Confirm its price on the official site before you budget for it.
Booking a timed entry
Colosseum entry is timed, and the official ticket information says the time slot is compulsory for these tickets. You choose a date and a time when you buy, and that time is printed on your ticket. Book through the official platform, which the Parco names as ticketing.colosseo.it. Walk-up entry is not a dependable plan in high season, and the official pages give no daily capacity figure, so the time slot is the only guaranteed way in.
The general official rule is that timed tickets go on sale 30 days before the visit. One official product page indicates that online sales for Full Experience Arena open 7 days before the visit. Check the sales date on ticketing.colosseo.it when you plan, and book as soon as tickets open for the dates you want. Arena and underground tickets tend to sell out within hours of release, and summer morning slots can sell out within minutes.
No official page sets a grace period, so arrive at least 15 minutes before your slot and treat any later arrival as a risk. Arriving 30 minutes early is the safer choice for Full Experience and underground tickets.
Arena floor and underground
The arena floor visit is a 20-minute tour on the arena floor, where gladiators once fought. You enter and leave on the Sperone Stern side, according to the Only Arena page on the official site. The regulation sets a limit of 50 people every 20 minutes for arena access, and the maximum stay on the arena floor is 20 minutes. For Full Experience Arena, Only Arena and arena underground tickets, the regulation sets a group limit of 25 people, including the tour guide. If you travel as part of a group, that limit changes how you book.
The arena’s last entry time is 18:00 on the official arena pages, but the winter Colosseum schedule ends entry at 15:30 from 25 October 2026. The official pages do not say which time applies to the arena in winter, so confirm it on the ticketing platform before you plan an arena visit late in the day.
For the underground, the visitor regulation describes a Full Experience Underground and Arena ticket valid for two consecutive days, but it does not list the full inclusions. Underground access is treated as a Full Experience feature. Do not book on the assumption that underground access is included. Check the current product list on the official ticketing platform first.
According to the official free-guide information from October 2024, a free guide ticket is required for the underground, the Attico and the arena floor. Build that step into your booking before you arrive, and confirm it against the current official page.
Visiting the Forum and Palatine
The standard combined ticket includes one entry to the Forum and Palatine. You do not pick a fixed slot for it. The official Only Arena page and the regulation place that entry within 24 hours before or after your booked Colosseum time. You can visit the Colosseum first and the Forum second, or the other way around. One common plan is to see the Forum in the morning and the Colosseum in the afternoon, or the reverse.
Full Experience tickets give more room. The Forum, Palatine and SUPER sites can be visited on the same day as the Colosseum, the day before, or the day after. Official guidance also advises booking all individual Forum and Palatine tickets for the same time slot when you travel as a group.
The official wording governs: the Forum and Palatine entry falls within 24 hours before or after your booked Colosseum time. The official pages do not say when that 24-hour validity starts, so plan within the window around your Colosseum slot and keep your ticket with you until your visit ends.
How long to allow
The official limits are about time spent inside the Colosseum. On the standard 24-hour ticket, the maximum stay inside the Colosseum is 75 minutes. The regulation excerpt sets 90 minutes for Full Experience tickets. Confirm it at the ticket office if your visit depends on it. The regulation also says the recorded entry time lets staff help visitors leave once the limit has passed.
No official source gives a recommended visit length. Editorial estimates, which are not official limits, put a Colosseum-only visit at about one to two hours. A Forum and Palatine visit runs about two to three hours. For a single day with both sites, a reasonable plan is three to four hours, which includes security checks, arrival and exit. A slow, unhurried tour of the full archaeological site can take four to five hours or more, and that is a good reason to split the sites across two days using Full Experience tickets.
Prices and reduced entry
The standard combined ticket is €18 for an adult, as listed for mid-October 2026. The Only Arena ticket is also €18. The Full Experience price is not shown on the official ticket page, so confirm it before you budget. Confirm all prices on the official ticket page before you budget, because they are the figures most likely to change.
Reduced prices are available for some visitors. EU citizens aged 18 to 25 pay €2, and the official wording runs until the day of their 25th birthday. The Amici del PArCo reduced ticket for the 24-hour combined ticket is €14, according to the official page. Visitors claiming a reduction or free entry must show proof at the ticket office before the ticket is issued. Visitors with a certificate of disability enter free. The official text does not settle whether a companion is also covered, so ask before you assume.
Check the official page for the exact age categories for free entry before you travel. The same goes for the Roma Pass. Confirm whether your pass covers a Colosseum slot and whether it requires an extra booking fee.
According to the official hours page, entry is free on the first Sunday of each month and on 25 April, 2 June and 4 November. Free tickets go first come, first served and need no advance booking. The arena, the underground and the upper levels are closed on free days. Free days save the ticket price, but queues can run two to three hours.
Opening hours and the winter schedule
The standard hours give a last entry at 17:30, with the park closing at 18:30. From 25 October 2026 to 28 February 2027, the winter hours apply: last entry is 15:30 and closing is 16:30. The site is closed on 25 December 2026 and 1 January 2027. The ticket office closes 60 minutes before the park closes, so a visitor who arrives late in the day may not be able to buy a ticket on site.
Winter hours matter most for planning a late-afternoon visit or a late arena slot. Because the arena’s 18:00 last entry does not match the winter Colosseum last entry of 15:30, check the arena hours on the official platform before you book a winter arena visit. Check the Forum and Palatine opening hours on the official site before you go.
Rules at the entrance
Tickets are personal and carry the holder’s name. They cannot be transferred to another person, according to the visitor regulation. Staff check tickets individually at the access points, and visitors must keep the ticket until the visit ends, because staff may ask to see it at any time. Bring the ticket on your phone or on paper, and bring the proof for any reduction or free category.
The official pages do not say whether you may leave the Colosseum and re-enter on the same ticket. Plan the visit as one continuous stay inside the Colosseum, within the 75-minute limit on a standard ticket, and ask staff at the entrance if you need to leave and return.
