Getting From Rome Fiumicino Airport to the City Center
Rome’s Fiumicino Airport connects to the city in four ways. Two are trains, the Leonardo Express and the FL1 regional train. Airport buses are the third option, and taxis, the fourth, charge a fixed fare. For most travelers heading to Roma Termini, the city’s main railway station, the Leonardo Express is the quickest choice. A single ticket costs €14, and the trip takes 32 minutes of non-stop travel. The FL1 costs €8, but it does not stop at Termini, so you must change to the metro. Buses cost about €5 to €7 when booked online and take roughly 45 to 65 minutes. A taxi to the historic center, the area inside the Aurelian Walls (the old city wall), costs a fixed €55 per trip for up to four passengers.
Fares and timetables change, so check the current Fiumicino train tickets and timetables on the airport operator’s page before you buy. Before you travel, confirm the bus and taxi details with the operator or the city’s tariff.
Leonardo Express to Roma Termini
The Leonardo Express runs non-stop between Fiumicino and Roma Termini in 32 minutes, with a train about every 15 minutes. For a predictable ride into the center, it is the simplest option. The Leonardo Express entry on Wikipedia gives the same route and service pattern, and the airport train page matches the operating hours below.
Trains run both ways for most of the day. From Roma Termini to Fiumicino, the first train leaves at 04:50 and the last at 23:05. From Fiumicino to Roma Termini, the first train leaves at 05:38 and the last at 23:27. Confirm these hours before an early or late flight. Some timetable listings show different first and last departures, so use the operator’s own figures.
The single fare is €14 per person, so two people pay €28 in total. Groups of four can buy a "Minigruppi" ticket: four tickets for €40 instead of €56. A ten-trip carnet costs €115. It is named to one holder and cannot be transferred to another traveler. A single ticket is valid for 90 minutes from the moment you validate it, or from the time printed on a ticket that station staff issued. Keep the ticket until you exit: you must show it to leave Roma Termini and to pass the turnstiles at the Fiumicino station.
Buy the ticket from the official sources, not a reseller. Some resellers list a headline price of €17.90 and add a fee the listing does not explain. The fare is €14. At the Fiumicino end, the Leonardo Express uses platforms 2 and 3, while the FL1 uses platform 1, according to the Airmundo transport guide.
FL1 regional train
The FL1 is a regional line run by Trenitalia, and its Fiumicino stop is the Fiumicino Aeroporto railway station. It costs less than the Leonardo Express, but it does not stop at Termini. It serves four central stops. Travel times from the airport are about 27 minutes to Roma Trastevere, 32 minutes to Roma Ostiense (34 minutes by another guide), about 41 minutes to Roma Tuscolana, and 47 minutes to Roma Tiburtina (48 minutes by the other guide). A single ticket to any of these four stops costs €8, and a return costs €16 according to the Northleg FL1 guide.
Fares vary by stretch of line. A Trenitalia-linked timetable listing shows a €8 fare from the airport to Fiera di Roma and a €1 fare from Tiburtina to Fiera, so the price depends on the segment you ride.
To reach Termini, get off at Ostiense, transfer to metro Line B at Piramide, and ride about seven minutes to Termini, passing the Colosseo and Circo Massimo stops. This route adds a change and a metro ticket to the trip. The Airmundo guide lists a metro single ticket at €1.50, a 24-hour pass at €7.00, a 48-hour pass at €12.50, and a 72-hour pass at €18.00. Confirm before buying whether these passes cover the airport train leg.
Frequency is another point to confirm. The airport train page lists a train every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on public holidays. Airmundo lists a train every 15 minutes without a holiday split. It is unclear whether an FL1 ticket also covers city transport. The FL lines says that travel between stations inside Rome is integrated with Metrebus, but it does not explain how the airport leg works. Ask the ticket office before you buy if you plan to ride the metro on the same ticket.
Airport bus options
Booked online, airport buses cost less than the train, but they take longer and their schedules vary more. Terravision runs directly to Termini. SIT reaches Termini through the Vatican area. TAM leaves from Termini, and Cotral runs an airport-to-Termini line and a night service from Tiburtina and Termini.
Published prices are €7 online for Terravision and €10 at the airport stop when seats are free. SIT costs €7 online and €6 at the bus station. TAM costs €7 online, and it sells on board to the driver for €7. Cotral costs €5 online and €7 on board for the airport-to-Termini ride. Terravision tickets sold online can be bought up to two hours before departure. SIT and TAM sell tickets on board, so bring cash or a card the driver accepts. Prices change, so check each fare on the operator’s website before you travel.
Travel times to Termini are about 55 minutes non-stop for Terravision and about 50 minutes for SIT. In normal traffic, the typical bus takes about 45 minutes, and the trip to central Rome can take 1 to 1.5 hours. Traffic is the main variable, so a morning or evening ride can run closer to the longer figure.
Departure times differ sharply between listings. One Terravision listing gives departures from 05:30 to 16:40, and another gives 00:30 to 23:30 from the airport. SIT’s last airport departure is listed around 00:30 to 00:40 in several places. Cotral runs about hourly from the airport. Before you plan a late arrival, confirm the last bus of the day with the operator rather than relying on a single listing.
Taxi flat fare to the historic center
A taxi from Fiumicino to the historic center has a fixed fare set by the Comune di Roma, the city government. The city’s tariff file labeled June 2026 sets the fare from Fiumicino Airport to inside the Aurelian Walls, including the return trip, at €55.00. The fare rose from €50 in August 2024. ADR, the airport operator, also lists the €55 fixed fare and notes that the municipality sets fares and can change them.
The fare is charged per trip, not per passenger. The fare does not change for groups of up to four people. The same tariff sets other fixed fares from Fiumicino. The fare to Ciampino is €55, the fare to Tiburtina is €60, and the fare to Ostiense is €50. The minimum fare for trips from Fiumicino Airport is €35.00, applies at all hours, and counts all supplements toward that minimum. The GRA is the ring road around the city. Trips that start inside it and end at Fiumicino are capped at €80.00.
Check two things before you get in. First, a separate taxi regime applies to Fiumicino’s municipal taxis. Those cabs charge €80 from the airport to inside the Aurelian Walls, with a €12 minimum. Look for "Comune di Roma" on the vehicle to confirm you are in the city’s fixed-fare system. Second, luggage is unclear. The earlier 2021 city tariff listed an excess luggage supplement, and the 2026 tariff does not settle whether luggage is included. Ask the driver to confirm the total before you leave the curb. Agree on the price in advance if your party is larger than four, since one reported fare for a group of six exceeded €150.
The tariff does not give taxi journey times. The official text also shows that the €55 fixed fare has no daytime or nighttime restriction.
Comparing the four options
The table below puts the four options side by side using the figures above.
| Option | One-way cost | Time to central Rome | Hours and frequency | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leonardo Express | €14 per person; €40 for a group of four | 32 minutes to Termini | Every 15 minutes; 05:38 to 23:27 from Fiumicino | Daytime travel to Termini |
| FL1 regional train | €8 | About 27 to 48 minutes to four central stops | Every 15 minutes; every 30 minutes on public holidays (per the airport page) | Lowest rail fare, close to Trastevere, Ostiense, Tuscolana, or Tiburtina |
| Airport buses | About €5 to €7 online; €6 to €10 on board | About 45 to 65 minutes to Termini | Varies by operator | Lowest cost, with more time |
| Taxi, fixed fare | €55 per trip for up to four people | Not given in the tariff | No time restriction confirmed | Door-to-door travel, heavy luggage, late arrivals |
Which option to choose
For one or two people going to Termini in daylight, the Leonardo Express is the sensible default. Two tickets cost €28, which is half the taxi fare. The train also avoids road traffic, and its 32-minute trip is the most predictable of the four options.
Groups of three or four weigh the taxi differently. Three single rail tickets still cost less than the €55 taxi fare. A group of four can buy the €40 rail group ticket, which saves €15 compared with the taxi. The taxi’s advantage is that it drops you at a hotel or apartment door. That matters if you carry several large bags and do not want to walk from a station with them. Because the taxi fare covers up to four people, the rail group ticket is the cheaper choice for a group of four unless door-to-door travel matters more than the cost difference. For groups of five or more, compare separate rail tickets with the taxi price. Confirm the fare with the driver before you start.
If you are on a budget and have time to spare, the bus is the least expensive way to reach the center. Booking online, you pay €5 for the Cotral ride or €7 for Terravision and SIT. Expect a longer trip, and check the operator’s last departure before you book.
The FL1 suits travelers whose hotel is close to Trastevere, Ostiense, Tuscolana, or Tiburtina. It is the cheapest rail option, but it adds a metro change if you are heading to Termini or the sights near the Colosseo. Travelers heading to Termini should pay the extra €6 difference in the Leonardo Express fare to avoid a transfer, unless the metro transfer is part of the plan.
Late arrivals and early departures need separate planning. The Leonardo Express does not run outside its published hours, so a flight that lands after 23:27 leaves a taxi or pre-booked transfer as the main option. Some bus operators run later, but last departure times differ from one listing to the next.
Checking the figures before you travel
For rail, check the airport operator’s page and the Trenitalia timetable before you travel. Check the Fiumicino train page for the current timetable and ticket options, and buy from official sources. Bus fares and times change more often than rail, so confirm the current prices and last departure on each operator’s website. The city’s tariff file dated June 2026 sets the current taxi fare. Confirm the fare with the driver and ask whether the total includes your luggage before you get in.
Points to remember before you travel
- Choose the Leonardo Express for Termini: It takes 32 minutes non-stop and costs €14 per person, and trains run about every 15 minutes from Fiumicino between 05:38 and 23:27.
- Use the FL1 only with a metro change: It costs €8 to the four central stops, but Termini requires a change at Ostiense to metro Line B at Piramide.
- Pay for the group ticket when you travel as four: Four tickets cost €40 on the Leonardo Express, which undercuts the €55 taxi fare for the same group.
- Ask the taxi driver about luggage before the trip: The €55 fixed fare covers up to four people per trip, but the official text does not settle the luggage rule.
- Keep the rail ticket until you exit: You need the ticket to leave Roma Termini and to pass the Fiumicino station turnstiles.
