Getting From Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík

Updated 8 min read Getting around

Keflavík International Airport (KEF) is a long drive from Reykjavík, so most travelers take a Flybus coach, a public bus, or a taxi into the city. As of October 2026, the Flybus coach costs 3,999 ISK one way for an adult, the Strætó Route 55 bus costs 2,400 ISK, and a pre-booked Hreyfill taxi costs 22,500 ISK for a small car. Take the bus if you travel alone or as a pair and want the lowest fare. Take the coach for the most dependable schedule. Take a taxi if four people share the cost or you need to reach your hotel door.

ISK is the Icelandic króna, the currency for every fare above. Fares change, so check each operator’s official page before you book. The prices here were last checked in October 2026.

Flybus, the standard coach

Flybus runs the most widely used coach service between the airport and Reykjavík. Its official page lists one-way fares from KEF to Reykjavík starting at 3,999 ISK for an adult, with no booking fees added on the official fare. The ride takes about 45 minutes.

Youth and child fares are not on Flybus’s own page. One reseller lists 2,000 ISK for ages 6 to 15 and free travel for children aged 1 to 5, and another lists 3,800 ISK for a bicycle or large sports equipment. Confirm these age bands and the bicycle fare with Flybus before you count on them.

Flybus describes its buses as running frequently to meet all arrivals. Departures leave about 35 to 40 minutes after each landing and run more often during busy periods. Flybus’s official page also says seats are guaranteed even when flights are delayed, which matters if your flight lands late at night.

One listing shows service around the clock, and another gives 03:50 to 23:00. Confirm the first and last departures on the Flybus site before you plan a late arrival or an early departure. The official timetable on the Flybus site covers the return direction, with the first pickup from Reykjavík toward the airport at 03:30.

Flybus also sells a Flybus+ product that includes a hotel drop-off. Its adult fare is listed at 5,199, 5,299, or 5,499 ISK, and no single figure is confirmed. Ask Flybus for the current Flybus+ price when you book.

Tickets sold through resellers are a separate product from tickets bought directly from Flybus. One reseller states that its return tickets can be refunded if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure, and that a partly used return is not refundable. That is the reseller’s policy, not Flybus’s, so read the terms before you pay.

Other coaches and shared shuttles

Several other companies sell airport coach seats. Airport Direct, operated under the Gray Line name, was priced at about $30 USD one way, with an extra $10 for hotel drop-off. That figure is old and unofficial, so ask the operator for a current price before you rely on it.

Shared shuttles, which pick up several passengers and take them to individual hotels, run about 4,000 to 6,500 ISK per person one way. That figure is undated, so treat the range as a rough benchmark. Terravision also serves the route. Check its fare and timetable directly before you plan around it.

Prices on booking sites rise and fall with demand. Keflavík to Reykjavík listings showed Flybus Economy and Terravision seats at about $31 to $33 USD per person on the dates it sampled. Those listings change daily, and the booking site may add its own fees, so compare the final total at checkout against the ISK fares above.

Strætó Route 55, the cheapest choice

Strætó is the public bus company for the Reykjavík region, and its Route 55 links Keflavík Airport with the capital. The official Strætó English page gives the adult fare as 2,400 ISK to Reykjavík and Garðabær, and 1,800 ISK to Fjörður and Hafnarfjörður. Reduced fares of 1,200 ISK apply to young people aged 12 to 17, passengers aged 67 and older, and people with disabilities in the Reykjavík zone. Children aged 11 and under ride free.

The official fare table is undated, so check the figures on the Strætó site before you budget. A solo traveler pays less on Route 55 than on Flybus one way at the current fares.

The trade-off is time and certainty. Route 55 takes about 75 to 80 minutes. Service is listed from about 06:30 to 23:00, with departures every 60 to 90 minutes at peak times and about every two hours off-peak. Confirm these frequencies on the Strætó site before a late-night or early-morning arrival.

Not every Route 55 trip ends at the central bus station (BSÍ) in Reykjavík. Official pages say some trips run to Fjörður in Hafnarfjörður instead, so confirm the destination on your departure before you board if your hotel is in central Reykjavík. Bicycles are allowed on weekdays at set times when space allows.

For payment, the Strætó Icelandic page lists debit and credit cards, cash, and the Landsbyggðarkort, a rural network card. Confirm with Strætó whether that card applies to airport travelers on Route 55, and check whether tickets can be bought in advance before you travel.

At the airport, arrivals from the capital are dropped at the terminal entrance. Departures to the capital leave from a Strætó stop in the Bus B pick-up area on the arrivals side, and an LED display at the shelter shows live departure times.

Taxis and private transfers

Taxis serve Keflavík Airport at all hours, and Isavia, the airport operator, sets out the rules that apply to every airport taxi. You may ask the price before you leave, and you may choose any suitable vehicle. A driver may not refuse a fare. Drivers must accept card and phone payments, and you can ask for a receipt. Isavia’s page does not show a publication date, so confirm the current rules with the airport when you arrive.

Hreyfill‘s pre-booked fixed fares give the clearest taxi price. Hreyfill’s tariff lists 22,500 ISK for a small car and 29,250 ISK for a large car, as fixed fares to and from KEF. The tariff took effect on 18 March 2026. The fixed fare applies to trips booked online, and the company’s homepage lists the trip at about 45 minutes for one to eight passengers, with the driver waiting at the arrivals hall. You can usually book the day before.

Hreyfill’s tariff also sets higher rates on public holidays. Its own tariff adds a 35 percent surcharge on top of the holiday rate for Good Friday, Easter Sunday, 17 June, and from noon on Christmas Eve to midnight on Christmas Day. If your arrival falls on one of those days, the fare will be higher than the standard figure.

The airport operator describes 490 ISK as a single-trip stand fee that drivers pay to use the taxi stand. It is unclear whether that charge is added to the Hreyfill fixed fare, since some listings describe it as a surcharge on departures from KEF. The airport operator’s news page also says the current stand tariff took effect in 2015, and Isavia has planned a rise to as much as 990 ISK per trip, with no confirmed start date. Ask Hreyfill whether the 22,500 ISK price is the full price before you pay.

Metered taxi fares are a different case. Unofficial guides estimate metered airport rides at 22,500 to 35,000 ISK, and one gives 16,000 to 22,000 ISK with no fixed rate. These figures are unofficial, and it is unclear whether a daytime ride from KEF is metered by default. Use the pre-booked fixed fare for a total you can rely on, and ask the driver for the fare before you set off if you take a metered taxi.

Private transfers cost more than taxis. Reseller benchmarks list 12,000 to 18,000 ISK per vehicle for one to three passengers and 18,000 to 28,000 ISK for five to eight. These are undated and not official.

Which option to choose

The best choice depends on how many people travel together and how much time you can spend in transit. Use the table below for a quick comparison.

Option Price (ISK) Time Notes
Strætó Route 55, adult 2,400 per person About 75 to 80 minutes Official fare; some trips end in Fjörður; schedule not officially confirmed
Flybus, adult standard 3,999 per person About 45 minutes Official fare page; operating hours unconfirmed
Flybus+, with hotel drop-off 5,199 to 5,499 per person About 75 minutes Price not yet confirmed with Flybus
Shared shuttle 4,000 to 6,500 per person Not confirmed Undated range
Hreyfill fixed, small car 22,500 per car About 45 minutes Tariff from 18 March 2026; 490 ISK treatment unresolved
Metered taxi 22,500 to 35,000 per ride 40 to 55 minutes Unofficial estimate only

A solo traveler or a pair should take Route 55 for the lowest cost or Flybus for the most direct service. The gap is large. A pair on Flybus pays 3,999 ISK each, while a Hreyfill small car costs 22,500 ISK for up to four passengers. A group of four is different: a small car at 22,500 ISK works out to less per person than four Flybus tickets at 3,999 ISK each. The taxi becomes the cheaper choice for four people, provided the 490 ISK question is settled and no holiday surcharge applies.

Flybus is the better choice when you arrive late at night or early in the morning and need a dependable departure. Route 55 suits travelers who have time to spare and can confirm their stop in Reykjavík before boarding. A taxi suits travelers with heavy luggage, families, or anyone who needs a direct ride to a hotel in an outlying area.

Checking figures before you travel

Fares and timetables change, so check the current figure on the official page of the operator you choose before booking. Flybus’s fares and times are on flybus.is. Strætó’s English fare table and route information are on the Strætó English page. Taxi fares follow Hreyfill’s published tariff, and the taxi rules are on the Isavia taxi page.

Reseller pages can carry useful schedules, but their prices and policies apply only to their own sales. Compare any reseller price against the operator’s official figure before you pay.

Quick picks by situation

  • Pick Strætó Route 55 for the lowest fare: The official adult fare is 2,400 ISK to Reykjavík, but the trip takes about 75 to 80 minutes and some buses end in Fjörður.
  • Pick Flybus for a direct, dependable ride: The standard adult fare is 3,999 ISK one way, with a journey of about 45 minutes, so confirm the first and last departures before you book a late or early flight.
  • Pick a pre-booked taxi for groups of four: Hreyfill’s fixed fare of 22,500 ISK for a small car is competitive with four Flybus tickets, but ask whether the 490 ISK stand fee applies before you pay.
  • Avoid metered fares in your budget: Unofficial estimates range from 16,000 to 35,000 ISK, so book a fixed fare if you want a price you can plan around.
  • Check the official page on the day you book: Fares, timetables, and surcharges change, and the holiday taxi surcharge applies on specific dates such as Christmas Day.
